About our Tourism & Hospitality Sector Committee

The Tourism and Hospitality Sector Committee represents the voice of the international tourism and hospitality industry in Vietnam. Our members range from hotels to tourism management companies to airlines and industry experts. We also give tourism and hospitality updates within EuroCham. 

To address the concerns of our members, advocate on their behalf, and provide recommendations to policymakers, we engage with key stakeholders such as:

  • The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • The Ministry of Public Security
  • Vietnam National Administration of Tourism
  • The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment
  • Vietnam Business Forum (VBF)

External activities

April 20: Held a meeting with representatives from the HCMC Department of Tourism. Both parties have established a close working relationship over the past few years, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022. The MOU aims to enhance collaboration in consultancy, event coordination, and training to promote tourism in Ho Chi Minh City.

 

June 1 & 2: Martin Koerner, a THSC member and former Chairman, participated in the Tay Ninh Business Connect Forum to deliver a presentation on sustainability in tourism.

 

August 17: Chairman Mario Mendis joined the Press Conference of ITE HCMC 2023 with DOT and Media.

 

August 23: THSC met Binh Thuan Province on potential investment in tourism, renewable energies and future collaboration. THSC recommended to develop retirement & medical tourism, sustainable tourism and destination marketing. Binh Thuan authorities highly appreciate the recommendations and suggest signing an MoU with EuroCham THSC in April 2024. 

 

November 16: THSC worked with Department Tourism HCMC & Discovery Channel TV for Exclusive TVC showing casing the culinary wonders of HCMC. 

 

December 19: THSC worked with Department Tourism HCMC & MISS Earth 2023, making a presentation on Sustainability initiatives taking place in HCMC and how Vietnamese suppliers can export worldwide sustainable products for hotels. 

 

December 11: THSC members including Make Your Asia, The Anam, Sofitel Saigon, together with Vietnam Airlines and UK Travel Agencies hosted 14 of the top luxury UK tour operators on FAM trip to Mui Ne & HCMC.

 

January 16: Chairman Mario Mendis delivered a speech at EuroCham Whitebook Launch 2024, emphasizing three pivotal advocacy pillars: visa policy for all EU member states, retirement & medical tourism, and sustainable tourism. He underscored THSC’s commitment to collaborating with Vietnamese government to address shared concerns, and cultivating a robust partnership that propels Vietnam’s tourism and hospitality sector forward.

Internal activities

2023:The election for new Board members took place. Mario Mendis, General Manager of the Sofitel Saigon Plaza, was appointed as Chairman, and Vu Thi Thanh Huong, Chief representative in Vietnam and Cambodia for Qatar Airways Group, assumed the position of Vice Chairwoman. 

 

Monthly SC meetings are held to provide updates and plan the agenda. 

Chairman Mario Mendis was interviewed by the National Assembly Broadcast regarding the extension of e-visa validity from 30 days to 90 days and its implications for the tourism sector.

THSC member Mauro Gasparotti interviewed with VTV4 on the effect of tourism recovery on real estate.   

 

THSC member Martin Koerner interviewed with VIR on the effect of the new visa policy on tourism. 

 

THSC worked with Department Tourism HCMC & VTV9 and was interviewed to discuss about HCMC as the next best MICE destination in South East Asia. 

Adocacy outcomes

Since 15 August 2023, new regulations on immigration management took effect:  

  • Implementing the issuance of electronic visas for citizens of all countries and regions territory. 
  • The electronic visa duration is increased from no more than 30 days to no more than 90 days and is valid for 1 time or multiple times. 
  • The temporary residence period for citizens of 13 countries that are unilaterally exempted from visas by Vietnam has been extended to 45 days.
