Unfolding Hue’s Emerging Green Transition at EuroCham Vietnam’s Hue Excursion

On December 10, 2024, EuroCham hosted the Green Excursion 2024 in Hue City, a rising hub of innovation and sustainability in Vietnam. The event gathered 20 distinguished participants, alongside EuroCham representatives and Thua Thien Hue officials, to explore sustainable investment opportunities in Hue, with a focus on green tourism, water management, and net-zero solutions. The day’s agenda included a morning roundtable dialogue at the Ben Xuan Garden House Theatre and afternoon visits to prominent green initiatives in the region.

Hue’s Pivotal Role in Green Transition

The morning session commenced with opening remarks by H.E. Mr. Daniel Stork, Consul General of the Netherlands in Vietnam, and Mr. Jean-Jacques Bouflet, Vice-Chairman of EuroCham Vietnam. Both speakers emphasized Hue’s pivotal role in Vietnam’s green transition, particularly following its recognition as the sixth centrally-governed city. They highlighted the potential for collaboration between European expertise and Hue’s sustainability goals in tourism, water resource management, and waste-to-energy solutions.

Adopting comprehensive strategies to implement Hue’s green city vision

Mr. Frank Pogade, Vice-Chairman cum Head of EuroCham’s Water Working Group, delivered a keynote presentation on challenges and opportunities regarding the water crisis and water management in Vietnam. Following the momentum, Mr. Cung Trong Cuong, Director of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Development Research Institute, presented on the city’s vision and strategy to transform Hue into a sustainable and livable city, touching on urban planning, innovative water and waste management practices, and the integration of green technologies.

The delegation then engaged in a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by GGSC Vice Chair-woman Betty Pallard, to explore how EuroCham in general and European companies can collaborate with Thua Thien Hue Province in the city’s green transition. Representatives from the Hue Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the Department of Tourism also provided valuable insights into the city’s strategy, showcasing their commitment to the city’s green vision.

Sustainability in action: site visit to water treatment and waste management factories

In the afternoon, participants visited key sites exemplifying Hue’s advancements in sustainable practices. At the Van Nien Factory, attendees observed cutting-edge water treatment technologies that contribute to efficient resource management. The visit to the Phu Son Waste Treatment Plant highlighted the city’s progress in waste-to-energy conversion and circular economy practices, reflecting its dedication to reducing environmental impact.

Green Excursion 2024 concluded with a reflection on the discussions and site visits, leaving participants inspired by Hue’s innovative approaches and its commitment to achieving a greener future. The active involvement of the Hue authorities underscored the strong partnership between local authorities and EuroCham in driving sustainable development. This event set the stage for future collaborations, reinforcing EuroCham and GGSC’s dedication to supporting Hue in its green transition and fostering long-term prosperity for the region.
