On the morning of 1 November 2024, EuroCham joined the “Vietnam Economic Pulse Forum: Navigating the Future—Adapting Vietnam’s Policies and Business Strategies to Global Economic, Technological, and Environmental Shifts” in Hanoi. Organised by the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the forum convened government leaders, business executives, and international representatives to discuss Vietnam’s policy direction in response to global shifts.
EuroCham Board Member and Co-Chair of the Green Growth Sector Committee, Stuart Livesey, represented the Chamber in a panel discussion focused on how Vietnam can leverage trade advantages and foreign investment flows to enhance its economic competitiveness. Mr. Livesey shared insights on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), discussing its potential impact on Vietnamese export industries, particularly those heavily reliant on EU markets. He provided recommendations for industries likely to face challenges under the CBAM, emphasising the importance of EuroCham’s Green Growth Sector Committee’s ongoing support through knowledge-sharing and policy guidance to help Vietnamese businesses transition smoothly.
Mr. Livesey also highlighted that the European Commission is actively preparing targeted support tools for Vietnamese exporters, including guidance materials and a CBAM self-assessment tool designed for EU importers, to ease the adaptation process.
The forum’s participants included key Vietnamese and international experts, such as UNDP Resident Representative Ramla Khalidi, CIEM President Tran Thi Hong Minh, and Senior Economic Advisor to the UNDP Jonathan London. They discussed the opportunities and challenges Vietnam faces in adapting its policies and business practices to align with global economic shifts and environmental standards, aiming for increased integration into global value chains.
With an emphasis on aligning with environmental and economic goals, the Vietnam Economic Pulse Forum facilitated crucial discussions on how Vietnam’s industries can strengthen their global standing while embracing sustainability as a core component of growth. Through active participation and strategic insights, EuroCham remains committed to supporting Vietnam’s efforts to navigate an increasingly complex global economic landscape.
