EuroCham’s Green Growth Sector Committee drives sustainability dialogue at “ESG: From Ideas to Action” workshop

On Thursday, 13 June, EuroCham Vietnam’s Green Growth Sector Committee (GGSC), in collaboration with The Saigon Times and ESG Alliance, hosted a workshop focused on promoting ESG practices in businesses. This event brought together attendees to address the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development in Vietnam.

EuroCham’s representation included:

  • Jean-Jacques Bouflet, EuroCham Vice-Chairman in charge of advocacy
  • Erick Contreras, GGSC Co-Chairman
  • Bao Nguyen, GGSC Vice-Chairman and Head of Communications
  • Betty Pallard, GGSC Vice-Chairwoman and Head of Events
  • Sergio Pereira da Silva, GGSC Vice-Chairman and the Head of its Sustainable Cities & Building Working Group

In his opening remarks, Mr. Contreras emphasised the significance of partnerships among businesses, government, and other stakeholders in contributing to sustainable development in Vietnam. He introduced the GGSC as a vital link between businesses and the government, facilitating the green transition through its four working groups.

“Businesses in Vietnam need to join hands to gain experiences from each other’s efforts in green transition and sustainability, promoting long-term plans and a green future,” he said.

Mr. Contreras also highlighted the importance of organising workshops and events to explore green growth further. He mentioned the upcoming Green Economy Forum & Exhibition (GEFE) 2024 in October and the GGSC’s ongoing advocacy efforts.

The workshop provided valuable insights into the current ESG landscape and practical applications in Vietnam:

  • Dženeta Mulabegović, Sustainable Development Specialist at UNDP in Vietnam, shared that ESG commitment in Vietnam is divided into Governance (62%), Environment (22%), and Social performance (16%). She also noted challenges in regulations, awareness, and technical and financial capabilities when promoting ESG.
  • Hai Truong Anh, Vice President OHSE & Community at NS BlueScope in Vietnam, discussed the lack of extensive experience in ESG practices among Vietnamese businesses. He shared NS BlueScope’s journey towards achieving Responsible Steel certification, providing a practical example of ESG implementation.

During the panel discussion moderated by Mr. Contreras, experts underscored the necessity for businesses to adopt ESG practices immediately and develop long-term strategies. They recommended using green taxonomies to facilitate the energy transition and promote green growth.

As Vietnam continues its journey towards sustainable development, the GGSC remains committed to being an advocacy bridge, supporting businesses in their green transition efforts.
